California Aviators Break Barriers

Lt. Cmdr. Evans and Lt. Serena N. Wileman, both trailblazing Naval Aviators from California, recently served in the Middle East, flying missions over Yemen and supporting Red Sea operations. Evans, known for her leadership, took part in the historic all-female flyover at Super Bowl LVII in 2023, celebrating 50 years of women in naval aviation. Wileman, commissioned in 2018, joined the “Zappers” squadron in 2021 and was praised for her dedication.

Tragic Crash in Washington State

During a routine training flight, their EA-18G Growler crashed in a remote, mountainous area near Mount Rainier. Rough terrain and bad weather delayed recovery efforts, but both aviators were confirmed lost. The Navy is still investigating the cause, pledging to prevent similar incidents.

Tributes from Navy and Nation

Commander Timothy Warburton expressed the squadron’s sorrow: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of two beloved Zappers. Our priority right now is taking care of the families of our fallen aviators and ensuring the well-being of our Sailors and the Growler community.” President Biden also honored them, stating, “Jill and I mourn the tragic loss of two naval aviators… They were among our nation’s finest…”

A Lasting Legacy

The loss of Evans and Wileman is a powerful reminder of the risks service members face. Their courage and groundbreaking contributions continue to inspire. The Navy remains committed to supporting their families and preserving their legacy.
