My Granddaughter’s Drawing
A Surprise Visit
A crayon drawing from my granddaughter Mia shook me to my core. Her innocent art revealed a secret my son Peter and his wife Betty had kept hidden for years.
Three years ago, they suddenly stopped inviting me over, always with excuses—“The guest room is being renovated,” or “We’re having plumbing issues.” Curious, I decided to surprise them with a gift. But Peter’s forced smile and Betty’s over-eager greeting told me something was wrong.
Hints of a Secret
During dinner, Betty rushed to stop me from entering the basement to fetch wine. Later that week, while babysitting Mia, I discovered a drawing showing someone living alone in the basement.
“That’s Grandpa Jack!” Mia said brightly. “Daddy says it’s a secret from you because it would make you sad.”
I froze. Jack—my ex-husband who had walked out twenty years ago.
The Basement Truth
When Peter and Betty returned, I confronted the basement door. A pause, then footsteps—and Jack appeared. Older, thinner, and full of remorse.
“I’m sorry,” he said. The basement was now his apartment.
“I lost everything,” Jack confessed. “I never expected Peter to forgive me, but he gave me five minutes.” After his apartment burned down, Peter and Betty took him in.
“They didn’t want to hurt you,” Jack said softly.
A Painful Choice
Peter admitted, “I was afraid you’d make me choose… I couldn’t just let him suffer alone.”
Then came the final blow: “He’s dying.”
Jack looked at me. “I don’t expect forgiveness… I just wanted to make things right.”
I left without an answer, burdened by emotions and questions I never expected to face again.
What would you do in my place?
