Texas Rep. Calls for Ilhan Omar’s Deportation
A political firestorm erupted after Texas Republican Rep. Brandon Gill suggested Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar be deported to Somalia. In a post on X, Gill claimed, “The United States would be a better place if she were sent back.” His comments followed a resurfaced video showing Omar advising immigrants—some possibly undocumented—on their legal rights when approached by ICE.
Video Sparks Accusations
The video, posted by conservative Greg Price, shows Omar saying: “You are not obligated to answer their questions. Just state that you are advised by a lawyer not to answer questions.” Critics accused her of helping undocumented immigrants avoid deportation. Gill’s spokesperson said, “It is disgraceful for a sitting Congresswoman to aid in what amounts to the invasion of our country.”
Omar Responds to Criticism
Omar, a naturalized citizen and former refugee, dismissed Gill’s remarks, telling journalist Mehdi Hasan, “These people are just idiots.” She criticized the political climate, adding, “It has become really hard to have an intellectual debate… the level of stupidity… is frankly, embarrassing—not just in Congress, but as Americans.”
