Loyal Dog Refuses To Let Go—Then

Attack and Rescue

Officer Cole Hunter was chasing criminals in the woods when he was hit in the head and fell unconscious.

His dog, Rex, ran back and found a criminal ready to stab the fallen officer. “Despite the fact that he was injured, Rex grasped the man’s arm under his elbow and wouldn’t let go.” The attacker eventually fled, and Rex led other officers to Hunter’s side.

Hospital and Vigil

Hunter suffered a major skull fracture and went into a coma. Rex waited outside the hospital’s emergency room but was not allowed inside. After three months, Hunter was taken home for 24-hour care, and “Rex never left” his side, staying close as the officer slowly began to recover.

Rex’s Warning and Recovery

One night, Rex sensed something was wrong and scratched the caregiver’s door. The nurse followed him and noticed, “Cole Hunter’s fingers moving.” Hunter began to improve and regain movement and speech. Later, when Hunter collapsed suddenly, Rex barked loudly to alert the caregiver, who called 911.

The Lazarus Effect

Hunter appeared to have died, but Rex refused to leave his side, growling to keep doctors away. After Rex’s insistence, “they heard coughing.” Doctors were shocked by the “Lazarus effect,” a rare phenomenon where the heart restarts after CPR is stopped. Rex’s belief saved his owner’s life when “everyone else had given up.”
