Texas Flash Floods Kill 24, Over 20 Children Still Missing

Deadly Floods Strike Kerr County
Flash floods swept through Kerr County, Texas, late on July 4, killing at least 24 people and leaving more than 20 children missing. Torrential rain caused the Guadalupe River to rise rapidly, flooding homes, roads, and campsites. Cars, cabins, and mobile homes were washed away during what was meant to be a holiday celebration.

Rescue Operations Ongoing
Rescue efforts have been nonstop. “Hundreds of first responders are here with resources from throughout the state to help us,” said the Kerrville Police Department. “Our thoughts remain with those who are unaccounted for and their loved ones.” Over 230 people have been rescued so far, according to CBS News.

Camp Mystic Among the Worst Hit
A major concern is Camp Mystic, a girls’ summer camp near the flood zone. Up to 25 children from the camp are missing. The camp had around 750 attendees at the time of the disaster.

Emergency Response and Support
The area saw a month’s worth of rainfall in hours, sending the river to a dangerous 26 feet. A state of emergency has been declared in several counties, with shelters set up for displaced residents. Officials warn the next 48 hours are critical as more rain could worsen the situation.

Helicopters, boats, and dogs are being used in search efforts. Volunteers are helping, and donations of water, food, and blankets are being requested. Local aid groups have also launched relief funds for victims’ families.
