Putin and Trump Meet in Alaska Over Ukraine Conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump met in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15 to discuss a potential peace deal regarding the war in Ukraine.

The meeting lasted over three hours but ended without a ceasefire or formal agreement.

“We didn’t get there,” Trump told reporters, “but we have a very good chance of getting there.”

A Productive but Inconclusive Discussion

Both leaders described the talks as productive, with Trump saying, “Many points were agreed to, and there are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant.”

No major breakthroughs were announced, but Trump suggested more talks and follow-up actions would happen soon.

A Surprise Invitation from Putin

At the end of their joint press conference, Putin surprised Trump with an unexpected remark in English: “Next time in Moscow.”

Trump appeared caught off guard and replied, “That’s an interesting one, I’ll get a little heat on that one. But I could see it possibly happening.”

No U.S. president has visited Russia since Barack Obama in 2013.

Trump Reflects on Peace Efforts and Pressure

Before the meeting, Trump admitted uncertainty about brokering peace. “I want to end the war. It’s Biden’s war, but I want to end it,” he said. Reflecting on past talks with Putin, he added, “Then I go home and I see that a rocket hit a nursing home… so I guess the answer to that is no.”

Regarding consequences if Russia didn’t cooperate, Trump warned: “Economically severe. It will be very severe… I’m doing this to save a lot of lives.”
