Zohran Mamdani Faces Criminal Referrals Over Alleged Illegal Donations

New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani faces two criminal referrals after the

Coolidge Reagan Foundation accused his campaign of accepting illegal foreign donations.

The filings, sent to the Department of Justice and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg,

allege violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act and New York Election Code.

Foreign Contributions Alleged

The New York Post reported Mamdani’s campaign received nearly $13,000 from at

least 170 donors abroad, including one from his mother-in-law in Dubai.

Dan Backer, the foundation’s president, said, “This was a sustained pattern of foreign money flowing into a New York City mayoral race.”

Campaign Response

Spokesperson Dora Pekec said, “All US citizens and permanent residents,

including those who live outside the US, are legally permitted to donate,” adding that any impermissible donations will be refunded.

Political Fallout

Despite controversy, Mamdani leads rivals Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa in most polls.
