Authorities name suspect in horrific

1. The Attack

Two West Virginia National Guard members were critically wounded in Farragut Square after a gunman “opened fire,”

prompting President Trump to call the shooting “a heinous assault—an act of evil, an act of hatred, and an act of terror.”

2. Suspect Identified

Police say 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who arrived in 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, acted alone.

Homeland Security confirmed his immigration history.

Trump vowed: “We will ensure the individual responsible faces the steepest possible penalty.”

3. Security and Policy Response

USCIS paused new Afghan immigration requests, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered 500 additional National Guard troops to D.C.

More than 2,200 Guard members are already deployed.

4. Public Reaction

Former Presidents Biden and Obama condemned the attack, while #AfghanEvac’s Shawn VanDiver warned,

“This was one man’s act of violence… not to stigmatize thousands of Afghans.”

General Nordhaus emphasized support for the wounded and continued safety.
