Woman Says ‘Chivalry Is In Fact Dead’ After No Men Offer Her A Seat On The Subway

A video posted by a woman on TikTok has sparked a fiery discussion about chivalry in public spaces like the subway.

In her now-deleted video, which has since gone viral on social media, the woman is seen standing in a subway car.

The on-screen text declared: “Chivalry is in fact dead. What happened to the days when men offered women their seats???”

The  camera then sweeps around the carriage, showing several men who are just sitting there, minding their own business.

Even though the original poster took down her video, it didn’t stop the conversation.

Other TikTok users reshared it through duets and stitches, igniting a fiery debate across the platform.

One TikTok user, @saraeatonontiktok, responded by saying: “Is it not what women have been fighting for? Equality. Screaming at the top of their lungs for independence.”

“So, what do you need a man to get up and give you a seat? You should have been there on time like a man to find your own seat.”

She further criticized the intent behind the original video, suggesting it shows how some women selectively expect certain behaviors from men, while also critiquing the video’s creator for filming strangers in public.

The debate quickly heated up in the comments section. One person remarked: “It’s called chivalry. Only people with class would understand.”

Another countered: “It’s called equality. Only people with a brain would understand.”

Many men also weighed in. One commented, “If a woman is elderly, disabled, VERY pregnant or otherwise physically unable to stand then I offer my seat. Otherwise, equality applies.”

Another shared a similar view, writing: “My chivalry is enabled only for the PWDs [people with disabilities], elderly, and pregnant.”

When should you give up your seat on public transport?

Here are some guidelines for navigating this social situation:

Priority Seating: Public transportation typically has seats marked for the elderly, pregnant women, people with disabilities, and those with young children.

If you occupy one of these seats and see someone who fits these categories get on, it’s considerate to offer your seat

Be Observant: Even outside the designated areas, keep an eye out for passengers who might need a seat more than you.

This includes those not just in the specified categories but also people who are visibly struggling to stand, those with heavy items, or those who seem unsteady

Offer Politely: If you see someone who might appreciate a seat, offer it kindly and respect their response.

Some might prefer to stand, especially if they are getting off soon.

Awareness: Pay attention to your surroundings, particularly during busy times.

Offering your seat can make the journey more comfortable for someone in need and enhance the overall atmosphere of communal travel.
