Massive magnitude 7 ear.thquake

A powerful magnitude 7 earthquake struck off Petrolia, California, on Dec. 5, at 10:44 a.m. PST. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued a warning for potential hazardous waves in the Pacific Ocean, spanning mid-Oregon to Santa Cruz.

The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 0.4 miles (0.6 km), about 39 miles northwest of Petrolia in Humboldt County. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), “hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km [186 miles] of the earthquake epicenter.” The warning excludes Hawaii.

Residents reported intense shaking along the California coast. The USGS noted limited landslides but no significant damage or injuries. Smaller quakes of magnitude 4.2 and 3.3 also hit the area.

Emergency responders remain on high alert as officials monitor the situation. “There are no immediate reports of damage,” stated The Los Angeles Times. Residents in affected zones are urged to stay vigilant for further updates.
