DHS, FBI Provide More Details After Bor

Authorities have confirmed that the man shot and killed by U.S. Border Patrol agents in

Minneapolis on January 24, 2026 was Alex Jeffrey Pretti,

a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse who worked at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System.

The shooting occurred during a federal immigration enforcement operation in south Minneapolis.

Federal officials have said Pretti approached Border Patrol agents armed with a

handgun and resisted efforts to disarm him, leading an agent to fire in self-defense.

However, family members and bystander video footage appear to contradict that account,

with some showing Pretti holding a phone and not a weapon when he was tackled.

Pretti’s death, which followed another recent fatal federal shooting in the city,

sparked protests and renewed debate over the presence and tactics of federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.

He was identified as a U.S. citizen and lawful gun owner with no serious criminal history,

and many who knew him described him as compassionate and dedicated to patient care.
