Prunella Scales, Beloved ‘Fawlty Towers’ Star, Dies at 93

Britain is mourning the loss of comedy legend Prunella Scales,

best known as the sharp-tongued Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers.

Scales passed away peacefully at home in London, aged 93.

“Our darling mother Prunella Scales died peacefully at home yesterday,” her sons Samuel and Joseph said.

“Although dementia forced her retirement from a remarkable acting career of nearly 70 years, she continued to live at home.”

They shared that she had been watching Fawlty Towers the day before her passing.

Born in 1932, Scales’ career spanned film, television, and theater.

Her portrayal of Sybil — witty, commanding, and endlessly quotable — made her a national treasure.

She also earned a BAFTA nomination for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in A Question of Attribution and

later won hearts alongside her husband Timothy West in Great Canal Journeys.

Tributes call her “a funny, intelligent, gifted human being” whose humor and grace will forever endure.
