Full-Time Security
FBI Assigns Full-Time Security to Deputy Director Dan Bongino
For the first time in its history, the FBI has assigned a full-time security detail to its Deputy Director, Dan Bongino. A rotating team of up to 20 agents will now provide him with 24/7 protection—even within FBI headquarters.
The agency called for internal volunteers to staff the protective team on temporary duty, ensuring continuous coverage. Bongino, a former NYPD officer and Secret Service agent, has opted to rely solely on this team for safety, rather than carry a personal weapon.
A Break from Past Practice
Previously, deputy directors like Paul Abbate only received limited, part-time protection. Full-time security has traditionally been reserved for the FBI Director and U.S. Attorney General.
Some former officials are questioning the decision. “This is taxpayer-funded protection,” one retired agent commented. “So it’s important to evaluate the threat level accurately.” The FBI has not publicly explained the reason for the added security.
Leadership Reforms Underway
Bongino and FBI Director Kash Patel are leading a reform-driven agenda within the bureau. The enhanced security appears tied to broader efforts aimed at maintaining leadership stability during internal changes.
“Not everything is visible right now,” Bongino said on social media. “But that doesn’t mean work isn’t being done behind the scenes.”
