Robert Redford, the Oscar-winning actor, director, and founder of the Sundance Film Festival,

died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday at his Utah home.

He was 89. Publicist Cindi Berger confirmed no cause of death was given.

Early Struggles and Family Loss

As a boy, Redford battled polio and later lost his mother at 18.

“The one person who stood behind me was my mother,” he once said.

Married young to historian Lola Van Wagenen, the couple had four children but lost their firstborn,

Scott, to SIDS. Their son James “Jamie” Redford later died in 2020 of cancer.

“The grief is immeasurable with the loss of a child,” Redford admitted.

Hollywood Icon and Builder

Redford starred in classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and

All the President’s Men. He won an Oscar for directing Ordinary People and created Sundance, nurturing independent voices in film.

Enduring Legacy

An environmental activist and champion of new storytellers, Redford is survived by his wife, daughters Shauna and Amy, and seven grandchildren. His life reflected resilience, vision, and a belief in stories that matter.
