Why Do Dogs Sniff Crotches?
Dogs explore the world through scent, using their noses to gather information. With around 220 million scent receptors—50 times more than humans—dogs rely heavily on smell to “read” people and animals. That’s why they often sniff each other’s rear ends and, sometimes, your crotch.

“It’s all about their keen sense of smell,” explains Dr. Jennifer Sperry, a veterinarian with Pets Plus Us Insurance.

The Science Behind the Sniff
Crotches emit strong odors from apocrine sweat glands, which release more scent than other areas. Dogs are especially drawn to these smells because they provide personal, identifying information. And for medium or large dogs, your crotch is simply at nose level.

As Dr. Sperry puts it, crotches are “a more noticeable scent source compared to other areas, like your hands or feet.”

How to Redirect the Behavior
Though the sniffing is natural, it can be awkward. Instead of scolding, gently redirect your dog with scent-based activities like:

  • Snuffle mats

  • Puzzle toys

  • Nosework games

  • Sniffer walks

This gives your dog healthy outlets for curiosity without embarrassment for your guests.

Teach Polite Greetings
Encouraging alternative behaviors is key. Teaching your dog to “sit” or give a high-five when guests arrive can replace the crotch sniff with a friendly, acceptable gesture.

Dr. Sperry recommends reinforcing commands like “sit” during greetings to “prevent awkward moments.”
