Tourist Shocks Museumgoers
Tourists Damage Artwork at Italian Museum
Two tourists caused damage at Palazzo Maffei in Verona by sitting on a valuable artwork called Van Gogh’s chair. The chair, created by artist Nicola Bolla and covered in Swarovski crystals, resembles the chair from Van Gogh’s famous 1888 painting.
Incident Caught on Camera
CCTV footage showed the couple walking through the museum. The woman perched on the chair for a photo, then the man sat down properly—causing the chair to shatter. They quickly left the room after the accident. The museum shared the video on social media but blurred the couple’s faces.
Museum’s Response
The museum condemned the act, calling it “an irresponsible gesture at Palazzo Maffei.” Their statement read: “Superficial and disrespectful behavior has put the integrity of a work of art at risk… ignoring every rule of respect towards art and cultural heritage.” They hope to raise awareness that “art must be admired, experienced, but above all respected. Always.”
Public Reaction and Outcome
Many people expressed outrage online. One commenter said, “They should be identified and punished for the damage caused.” Others demanded the tourists pay for repairs. Though some speculated the couple was American, this remains unverified. According to the New York Post, the artwork was later restored, offering a “slightly happy ending.”
